You've seen Claude or ChatGPT turn a document into slides. Here's how in Copilot: start a new deck in PowerPoint, open Copilot, and ask it to create a presentation from your file.

A common situation (composite)

The report took two weeks.
The deck is due tomorrow and has to say the same thing in ten slides.
I don't want to copy and paste for three hours.

What you get

  • Data: one Word document or PDF in OneDrive or SharePoint.
  • Does: drafts slides from the document.
  • Output: a draft deck in your template.
  • How often: each report.

Before you start

  1. Needs: Microsoft 365 Copilot. Not sure what you have? Start here.
  2. Where: PowerPoint, Copilot.
  3. Access: Copilot only uses content you already have permission to open. Use only information your company allows in Copilot.

The steps

  1. Start a new presentation from your company template so Copilot uses its layouts.
  2. Open Copilot and choose Create presentation from file, or type / and pick the file.
  3. Send, then review the draft slide by slide.
  4. Use the follow-up prompt to tighten. Check every number against the report.

Copy this prompt

Tighten this deck for [audience] in a [10]-minute slot.
- One message per slide, in the slide title
- No more than 4 bullets per slide
- Add a summary slide at the start with the 3 main findings
- Move detail into speaker notes

Data tip: use this with your work Copilot, and leave out passwords, payment details and anything your company marks restricted.

What a good result looks like

Numbers on slides match the report. Headings in your Word file become sensible slide titles.

If a feature is missing

Copilot works best when the Word file uses Heading styles. If Create presentation from file isn't there, check with IT: some PowerPoint Copilot features also need a Designer license.

Make it smarter

Keep a short "What it got wrong" note. Paste it above the prompt next time, like "Don't invent dates".

Not sure what to ask? Copy the quick note for your Copilot admin.

Sales version: from research to proposal deck

For a proposal the customer didn't ask for, the order matters: research first, then a Word draft you check, then the deck. The deck is only as good as the draft behind it.

  • Research: use the research brief for the customer's goals.
  • Draft: write the proposal in Word and check every claim.
  • Deck: build the deck from that Word file, then add one customer-specific slide.

Prompt

Create a 6-slide proposal deck from [file]. Slides: their goal, the problem in their words, what we propose, proof, cost and timeline, next step. Use only content from the file.

Make it better

Run this next, in the same chat.

Go through each slide and list any claim that isn't in the source file, and any slide with more than four bullets. Don't change numbers.
