You've seen people drop a PDF deck into ChatGPT for a summary. Here's how in Copilot: open the deck in PowerPoint and ask Copilot. It shows where each point came from.
A common situation (composite)
The meeting is in 20 minutes.
The pre-read is 60 slides.
I need the three things that matter.
What you get
- Data: one PowerPoint file.
- Does: summarizes and finds key slides and actions.
- Output: bullets with references to slides.
- How often: before any meeting with a pre-read.
Before you start
- Needs: Microsoft 365 Copilot. Not sure what you have? Start here.
- Where: PowerPoint, Copilot.
- Access: Copilot only uses content you already have permission to open. Use only information your company allows in Copilot.
The steps
- Open the deck in PowerPoint.
- Select Copilot on the ribbon.
- Paste the prompt below, or type Summarize this presentation.
- Check the references for anything you'll repeat.
Copy this prompt
Summarize this presentation in 5 bullets for someone who has 2 minutes.
Then: which 3 slides should I read in full, and why?
Then: list any action items or asks of the audience, with slide numbers.

Data tip: use this with your work Copilot, and leave out passwords, payment details and anything your company marks restricted.
What a good result looks like
Each bullet points back to the deck. Read the 3 slides it picks.
If a feature is missing
Copilot in PowerPoint summarizes decks up to about 40,000 words. For longer files, split them.
Make it smarter
Keep a short "What it got wrong" note. Paste it above the prompt next time, like "Don't invent dates".
Not sure what to ask? Copy the quick note for your Copilot admin.
Long documents too
The same trick works in Word or Copilot Chat with a file attached. Contracts, reports and RFPs are where it saves the most time.
- In Word: open the document and ask Copilot for a summary from the Copilot pane.
- In Copilot Chat: attach or reference the file and use the prompt below.
- RFPs: for a full breakdown, see the RFP first-pass guide.
Prompt
Summarize [file] in five bullets for a [your role]. Then list anything that affects price, dates, or what we're committing to, with the page or section number for each.

Make it better
Run this next, in the same chat.
Now list the three things in this document I'd most regret missing, and anything that seems to contradict something else in it. Point to the section each time.
