Catch up on a busy Teams chat or channel
Teams, Copilot in chats
Short answer: In a Teams chat, select Open Copilot in the upper-right corner and ask it to summarize what you missed. It covers the last 30 days by default, so name a time frame. For a channel thread, open More actions and select Summarize thread.

You've seen Slack AI recap channels. Here's how in Copilot: open a Teams chat, select Open Copilot, and ask what you missed. For a channel thread, use Summarize thread.
A common situation (composite)
I was out for a week.
The project chat moved on without me.
I need to know what changed before I reply to anything.
What you get
- Data: one Teams chat or channel thread.
- Does: summarizes messages over a time frame.
- Output: a summary of decisions and asks.
- How often: after time away or a busy day.
Before you start
- Needs: Microsoft 365 Copilot. Not sure what you have? Start here.
- Where: Teams, Copilot in chats.
- Access: Copilot only uses content you already have permission to open. Use only information your company allows in Copilot.
The steps
- Open the chat in Teams.
- Select Open Copilot in the upper-right corner.
- Paste the prompt with your dates.
- For a channel thread, select More actions > Summarize thread instead.
Copy this prompt
Summarize this chat from [date] to today.
- Decisions made
- Anything asked of me, with who asked
- Open questions nobody answered
- Files or links shared that I should open
(Prompt from stuckwithcopilot.com/guides/teams-chat-catch-up/)
What a good result looks like
Scroll to the messages behind any decision before acting on it.
If a feature is missing
Channel threads need at least 1,000 characters of text to summarize. Short threads are faster to read.
Make it smarter
Keep a short "What it got wrong" note. Paste it above the prompt next time, like "Don't invent dates".
Not sure what to ask? Copy the quick note for your Copilot admin.
