Copilot Chat

Jump to the prompt โ†“

Short answer: Keep a short log: the task, rough minutes before Copilot and after, and what you did with the time. Once a month, paste it into Copilot Chat and ask for the total, what you did with the extra time, and three self-review bullets. Keep the numbers honest so they hold up.

Microsoft sells Copilot to your company on hours saved. Track what it does for you. Hours saved only count if they turn into more calls, faster proposals and closed deals with your name on them. Copilot doesn't replace you. It makes you more resourceful, and a log makes that visible at review and raise time.

A common situation (composite)

I write proposals in half the time now.
My manager has no idea.
At review time I can never remember what I did.

What you get

  • Data: a running log of tasks and rough minutes.
  • Does: totals the time and ties it to results.
  • Output: a monthly summary and self-review bullets.
  • How often: a few seconds per task, ten minutes a month.

Before you start

  1. Needs: Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Not sure what you have? Start here.
  2. Where: Copilot Chat, plus a simple Excel sheet or note for the log.
  3. Access: Copilot only uses content you already have permission to open. Use only information your company allows in Copilot.

The steps

  1. Start a log with four columns: date, task, minutes before, minutes with Copilot.
  2. Add a fifth column: what you did with the saved time (extra calls, a proposal sent early, a deal closed).
  3. At the end of the month, paste the log into Copilot Chat with the prompt.
  4. Check the totals yourself.
  5. Save the bullets in a folder for your next review.

Copy this prompt

Here's my log of tasks I used Copilot for this month:
[paste: date | task | minutes before | minutes with Copilot | what I did with the time]

Give me:
- Total hours saved, with the math shown
- The three tasks that saved the most time
- What I did with the time, grouped (calls, proposals, deals, other)
- Three bullet points for my self-review, each linking time saved to a result

Don't inflate anything. Use only what's in the log.

Make it better

Run this next, in the same chat.

Now rewrite those three bullets for a conversation with my manager about growth and pay. Make each one specific: what I did, the result, and why it matters to the team's number. Keep them plain and confident, under 30 words each. Then suggest one new task I could try Copilot on next month based on where I spend the most time.

Data tip: use this with your work Copilot, and leave out passwords, payment details and anything your company marks restricted.

What a good result looks like

The totals match your log when you check them. Each bullet ties a time saving to something your manager cares about.

If a feature is missing

If you don't want to track every task, log your top three each week. That's enough for a believable monthly total.

Make it smarter

Keep a short "What it got wrong" note. Paste it above the prompt next time, like "Don't invent dates".

What do I need for this?

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. If you don't want to track every task, log your top three each week. That's enough for a believable monthly total.

Won't showing time saved make my boss think I'm not needed?

Not if you show what you did with the time. "I saved six hours and used them to send two more proposals" makes you look more valuable, not less. That's the point of the log.

How accurate do the minutes need to be?

Rough is fine as long as it's honest. Round down when unsure. A modest, believable number holds up better than a big one.

Can I share this with my team?

Yes, and it helps. If your team shares logs, managers can see which Copilot uses actually pay off and everyone learns faster.
