You've seen people ask ChatGPT "tell me what's interesting in this spreadsheet." Here's how in Copilot: ask Copilot in Excel. It answers with charts, PivotTables, trends or outliers in the workbook.
A common situation (composite)
The data is clean.
I still need three sentences for leadership.
I don't know which numbers matter.
What you get
- Data: a clean Excel table.
- Does: finds trends and outliers and builds a summary.
- Output: a PivotTable or chart and a 5-line summary.
- How often: weekly.
Before you start
- Needs: Microsoft 365 Copilot. Not sure what you have? Start here.
- Where: Excel, Copilot.
- Access: Copilot only uses content you already have permission to open. Use only information your company allows in Copilot.
The steps
- Open the workbook in Excel.
- Open Copilot. Use chat mode if you don't want the sheet changed.
- Paste the first prompt, then the second.
- Check every number in the summary against the sheet.
Copy this prompt
Prompt 1: find it
Look at this table. Which [region / product / team] had the highest and lowest [metric] this [week]? Are there any outliers? Build a PivotTable of [metric] by [category] and [week].

Prompt 2: say it
Write a 5-line summary for my manager: biggest change vs last [week], one outlier and a likely reason to check, and one question I should ask the team. Use only numbers from this workbook.

Data tip: use this with your work Copilot, and leave out passwords, payment details and anything your company marks restricted.
What a good result looks like
The numbers in the summary match the PivotTable.
If a feature is missing
If the sheet isn't in a supported format, start with the data cleanup guide.
Make it smarter
Keep a short "What it got wrong" note. Paste it above the prompt next time, like "Don't invent dates".
Not sure what to ask? Copy the quick note for your Copilot admin.
Sales version
Microsoft's sales scenarios start with Excel's built-in insights before writing anything. That's a good habit: let Copilot point out what changed, then decide what matters.
- Start with insights: ask Copilot in Excel for insights on the table before you write a single word.
- Then the summary: turn the two or three that matter into lines for your update.
Prompt
Show me the three biggest changes in this sales table compared with last period, and the customers or products behind each one. Add a chart for the biggest change.
(Prompt from stuckwithcopilot.com/guides/excel-summary-report/)
Make it better
Run this next, in the same chat.
Write three lines for my weekly update from those changes. Each line: what changed, by how much, and what I'm doing about it. Use only numbers from the table.

Data tip: use this with your work Copilot, and leave out passwords, payment details and anything your company marks restricted.
